This has always been one of my favorite Garcia Band songs and I believe this would have made a nice GD song as well. I could see this as a first set closer, much like Birdsong in the 80's.

Great versions can be found in many years including 1976 (From the album Dont let Go), 1978- seeding right now at Lossless Legs- check out a nice soundboard from 10-26. 1981 has a great version from 8-20-81 that goes right in to Tangled up in Blue without skipping a beat. Finally, it was brought back in many excellent shows from 1989, many with Clarence Clemmons.

Here's Slowhand's version to check out:

Out on an open highway,
Such a lovely day but something's wrong.
Something, something's gotta be wrong.

I just left home this morning,
This old road keeps rolling on and on.
Rolling, rolling on and on.

Won't somebody help me?
Won't somebody help me?
Won't somebody help me?
I've never been so lonesome and long way from home,
Never been lonesome and long way,
Never been lonesome and long way from home.

One of those great Delaney and Bonnie tunes, co-written with Leon Russell.
Funny you should mention it, as I have just been listening to great versions from 5/21/76 this morning, which clocks in around 14.5 minutes, and 3/18/78 which is stretched out with some spacey jamming to almost 20 minutes.

I have purchased every official Jerry release, but my wish to have more has been granted - a buddy has lent me his Jerry book, with over 100 cds.

4/3/76 is 22 minutes and well worth seeking out if it's part of your friends collection

No such luck. Does have a muddy aud from 4/1/76. Looking around with help from the jerry site and find that I have many shows that fall on either side of the dates with Lonesome. If all these new additions to my collection don’t quell my insatiable appetite, I just may have to bring myself to check into torrents. I have long wished to hear ‘Who Was John’ again (had it on cassette long ago) , but sadly it isn’t represented in my friends collection.

Thanks for the post and recommendation.

Just got a fantastic Who Was John from 8-7-1977. Great show overall... Jerry hits the right notes in all the right spots.

3-6-1976 has a fantastic Lonesome And A Long Way From Home with some really nice Jerry/Donna harmonies. Plus its a MOTB AUD!

Mislabeled, but pretty cool cover. Enjoy.

Good stuff from Keller! Seems like he is/was a pretty big Deadhead. Obviously with Gatecrashers Suck and all his GD and GD extended family covers. Wonder when he started seeing shows...

great tune. one of those (harder they come, don't let go, catfish, way you do the things you do, get out of my life, how sweet it is, mystery train, etc., etc) that always made me choose jgb over gd
